Campania Padula

Padula’s Charterhouse and Pertosa Caves

Enjoy a whole day discovering the wonders of Cilento: the Certosa di Padula and the Caves of Pertosa. Meeting with the guide on the spot (timetable to be agreed).

The Certosa di San Lorenzo, better known as the Certosa di Padula, is a former monastery now a UNESCO site and is the first to be built in Campania: construction began in 1306 and lasted until the 18th century. The guide will make your way inside the site starting from the external courtyard passing through the stables, the Church, which contains magnificent frescoes and the majolica floor, and the Sacristy. We continue with the bell room, the chapter room and the treasury room. From the cloister of the ancient cemetery you enter the Founder’s Chapel and the Refectory and then linger in the Kitchen. The guided tour continues towards the Quarto del Priore, the octagonal tower in which it is possible to admire the famous Vanvitellian helical staircase and will end in the grandiose cloister of 12000 square meters, the largest in Europe (duration of the visit about 2 hours).

In the afternoon arrival in Pertosa (distance from the Certosa by car: about 40 min) and visit of the Caves with a specialized guide inside the site. The Caves extend for about three thousand meters in the Alburni Mountains massif and are characterized by stalactites and stalagmites. It is the only cave in Italy where it is possible to navigate an underground river. The guided tour allows a partial or total tour of the cave. It starts from the Hall of Wonders and then continues by boat until the arrival at the large entrance. From there the guide will accompany you on foot to the Throne Room and the Great Hall 24 meters high. The partial visit ends here. Those who choose to make the complete visit will continue the journey up to the great Underground Waterfall and the Hall of Paradise.
